What we can confirm: the post exists, it went viral on June 20, and plenty of people are furious about it. What we can't confirm: that Jeff Bezos ever said this.
Not one of the viral posts includes a quote, a clip, a date, a venue, or a link to Bezos saying anything of the kind. The claim is stated as fact and sourced to nothing.
So how does a claim with no receipt reach millions? The sentence is engineered to travel. It names a famous billionaire, sets up a clean villain premise (your drinking water versus his machines), and ends on the word INSANE. It needs no link, because outrage rarely asks for one.
There is a real debate underneath about how much water AI computing uses, which is part of why the line lands so easily. But "data centers use water" and "Bezos said humans should drink less so AI can have more" are very different statements. The second is a direct quote, and a direct quote needs a source. This one doesn't have a traceable one.
The reaction has been exactly as heated as you'd expect. One account insisted the claim "should SCARE EVERYONE!!!!!" [3], which captures the mood while adding, once again, no evidence.
