Brooke George, a 23-year-old former John Lewis worker from Gravesend, Kent, has been charged in Dubai with the premeditated murder of a 26-year-old British man she met online, and if convicted she could be executed by firing squad. [1]

That last clause is where the viral version runs ahead of the facts. The posts ricocheting around say she "will likely face death by firing squad," as if the sentence were already written. She has been charged, not tried. She says she grabbed a kitchen knife in self-defence during a violent assault, and the advocacy group representing her is asking that the case be treated as domestic violence and that she be released on bail. Here's how the charge can carry that penalty at all: under UAE law, premeditated murder is a capital offence, and execution there is carried out by firing squad. So the headline is technically accurate and also doing a lot of quiet work, because "premeditated murder" is the charge she disputes, not a finding a court has made.

Her account, relayed by the group Detained in Dubai, is that she met the man on Facebook and travelled out after an online relationship. The first visit she called "the time of my life." [2] On the second, she says his behaviour changed: controlling, abusive, and she discovered he had booked her a one-way ticket. After a night at a bar in Jumeirah Village, she alleges he assaulted her in the car and again at the apartment. She says she returned only to recover her passport, was punched in the face, feared for her life, and reached for a knife within her grasp. [2]

She was arrested in the early hours of 22 June 2026, bruised, at the airport. [1]

The detention details are their own story. The group says she was forced to strip naked in front of male officers with no female officer present, has had no lawyer, and was denied access to her embassy. [1] She is being held at Bur Dubai Police Station, where British tourist Lee Bradley Brown died in police custody in 2011. [2]

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office says it is supporting a British woman detained in the UAE. None of George's account has yet been tested in court, and the investigation, by her family's account, has barely begun.
