Two young men stood outside the arrivals hall holding stuffed toys and flowers, the way people do when they're waiting to surprise someone off a flight. One of them walked up to a 39-year-old man, pulled a gun out from behind a teddy bear, and shot him point-blank. Security footage caught the whole thing.

This is one of those stories where the cartoonish detail is the confirmed part. The gun-behind-the-teddy ambush is not internet embellishment, it's on camera and reported the same way by multiple outlets. [1]

The dead man was Carlos Alberto Suástegui Villanueva, identified by Ecuador's interior minister John Reimberg as the leader of the Los Águilas gang in El Triunfo, a region east of Guayaquil. [2] Los Águilas was designated a "terrorist organisation" by President Daniel Noboa in 2024 and is accused of heavy involvement in drug trafficking and extortion. Police have detained two teenagers in connection with the killing.

It happened at José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil on Wednesday. The footage shows the first gunman running off after the shots, while the second attacker turns back and fires another round at Suástegui. Passengers scattered in panic, according to the newspaper El Universo. One bystander was hurt, and video showed a man wheeling a suitcase collapsing to the floor as the shooting unfolded. The arrivals hall stayed closed for more than two hours while forensic teams worked the scene.

The timing is its own detail: the attack came just one day after Noboa declared a fresh state of emergency in 10 provinces, including Guayas, where it happened. [1] Those emergency declarations hand security forces extra powers, including searching homes without a warrant when they have reasonable grounds. They have not turned the tide.
