England's players are cleared to take Viagra at the 2026 World Cup, and the world's anti-doping authorities are fine with it.

The reason is altitude. Mexico's Estadio Azteca sits roughly 7,350 feet above sea level [1], where the thin air drains running footballers faster than they'd tire at home. Sildenafil, the drug sold as Viagra, relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow, and that same effect can cut the fatigue of hard physical exertion high up. The lungs benefit from the plumbing that made the pill famous.

What's confirmed

talkSPORT reported that England stars will be allowed by WADA to use Viagra to cope at World Cup altitude [2]. That part holds up: taking it is legal, the venue really is that high, and there is genuine science behind using the drug against altitude fatigue.

Where the framing oversells

"Allowed by WADA" makes it sound like England were handed a special dispensation. They weren't. Sildenafil isn't on the prohibited list, so "allowed" just means "not banned", the same status it carries for every other team in Mexico. This is a quirk of a legal drug, not a doping loophole with three lions stamped on it.

England's players have already been asked about it on camera. "They're pretty good!" said one; another offered, "I felt solid in the game!" [3]

Predictably, the internet handled the rest with the maturity you'd expect.

“The competition is stiff, hopefully this can help them focus on their ball handling.”

What's still open is whether anyone actually uses it. Being permitted a fatigue aid and choosing to swallow one before a World Cup knockout tie are different things, and no England player has confirmed a plan to. The altitude, at least, isn't going anywhere.
