Five men have been found duct-taped to street lampposts in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco. Some had their mouths taped shut, several showed signs of a beating, and the motorcycles they allegedly stole were left parked right next to them. [1]
Locals started calling whoever is doing this "El Batman de Lagos de Moreno." The nickname stuck, the photos went everywhere, and by late June 2026 the story had been picked up by accounts with millions of followers framing it as Mexico's own caped crusader hunting bike thieves after dark. [2]

Here's the part the viral version skips: nobody knows who Batman is, or whether "he" is even one person. The tied-up men are real and photographed. The lone-vigilante mythology around them is not confirmed by anyone. Polymarket and the larger accounts spreading the story all hedge with the word "reportedly," and police have only said the taped men themselves are being investigated. [3]
So how does one masked guy subdue five young men, beat several of them, and tape each to a pole without any of them running? The honest answer is that the sources don't show that he does. The most-upvoted skeptics in the thread point out the obvious physics problem.
“Wouldn't be surprised if it's a local armed gang (affiliated or not). I can't imagine a situation where a physically fit young man either doesn't flee on foot from a single person or group, or voluntarily stands still while his assailant(s) tape him to a post to humiliate him without some immediate threat to his life. Even if they knocked him out beforehand it'd take at least two guys to prop him up while another tapes him. This could also just be some photos for the memes; it is the internet after all.”
A gun would explain the compliance, several commenters noted, and at least one person observed that "most those dudes look like they took some damage before being taped up" — consistent with a group, not a brooding loner. [4] None of that is established fact; it's the internet reasoning out loud. But it's a more grounded read than the comic-book one.
What is solid: in roughly a ten-day stretch, at least five alleged motorcycle thieves ended up bound to public lampposts in the same town, stolen bikes alongside them. [2] Whether that's one vigilante, an armed neighborhood group, or something closer to a local gang settling scores remains exactly the question police haven't answered.
For now the legend is running well ahead of the evidence. The taped men are under investigation; the man behind the tape, if it's a man, and if it's one, is not.
